Course Data
Course Description
The course starts at the first temple of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, Ryozenji Temple, and goes all the way to the 10th temple, Kirihataji Temple. On the way back to the goal, you can enjoy a pleasant ride along the Yoshino River. The word "utsu" is used around here which refers to making a pilgrimage to the temples.
Caution Areas
Be careful riding on the Muyakaido Road (Prefectural Road No. 12) as there is heavy traffic. From Kawashima Bridge to Nada Bridge, the road runs along an embankment, so no cars will pass by, but be considerate to pedestrians.
Challenging Sections
The pilgrimage section in the first half of the course has a series of ascents and descents. Although there are no tall mountains overall, the steep, wall-like slope at Kirihataji Temple is the most difficult point, with an elevation gain of 158 meters.
Highlights
The full route of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage is approximately 1,460 km long. Ryozenji Temple, the first temple, is known as the “Temple of Vows” and serves as the starting point of the long journey undertaken with the spirit of “two traveling as one” (pilgrim and Kōbō Daishi). Many people come to visit it. In Tokushima, Ryozenji is affectionately referred to as "Ichiban-san" (1st Temple). In the latter half of the course, you can enjoy the majestic view of the Yoshino River from the embankment path.
