Course Description

Zennyuji Island is the largest island in Yoshino River. It is located about 30 km from the mouth of Yoshino River and is about 500 hectares. Vast, maintained fields on the island are decorated with rape blossoms, sunflowers, and cosmos every season, making it a popular filming location. Crossing the submersible bridges to the island is one of the pleasant parts of the course.

Caution Areas

Prefectural Highway 12 and National Highway 192 are busy and the roadside strip is narrow, so be careful when riding. The submersible bridge cannot be crossed when the water level rises above the bridge. Check the rain cloud radar often during seasons when the weather changes frequently.

Challenging Sections

There are no major difficulties on this course, but the climb to the 9th temple, Horinji Temple, may be difficult if you are not physically fit or if you are riding a city bicycle (mamachari).

Highlights

The biggest attraction of this course is the chance to experience the vastness of the Yoshino River. Zennyuji Island is so large that you might hardly believe it’s really a river island. Submersible bridges are now rare, making them a unique feature of this course. Horinji Temple is known for prayers for strong legs and lower back, with “prayer sandals” dedicated there—making it a perfect stop for cyclists.

Parking Lot (Start & Goal)

Kamojima Community Center is the base of this course. Across the street from the center, Egawa Kamojima Park is a waterfront park famous for its cherry blossoms. The park has cute stone statues of kappa and tanuki (raccon dog) and a folktale street where you can hear folktales being played.
