Course Description
Mt. Bizan is a sacred place for cyclists in Tokushima. This course is recommended for those who want to become better at cycling climbing. There are 2 courses up the mountain. If you are going up from Hachiman Town side where the famous Azurizaka slope is located, you will climb the Bizuhachi slope. If you go up from Shomachi Town side, you will climb Bisho slope. Challenge yourself and try both!
Caution Areas
There are many pedestrians on both the Shomachi Town and Hachiman Town side. Please be careful of oncoming vehicles. The road surface on the Shomachi Town side is slippery due to moss and fallen leaves.
Challenging Sections
Despite a low elevation of 244 meters, there is a steep ascent. The incline at Bisho slope from the Shomachi Town side is easier to go up.
Highlights
Mt. Bizan, the symbol of Tokushima City, is famous as a training course for cyclists. Although it appears gentle from a distance, don’t be fooled! In the Awa dialect, the word “azuru” means “to struggle,” and the slope on the Hachiman Town side, with a 14% incline, is called “Azuri-zaka” (Struggling Slope) for that reason. From the observatory at the summit, you can enjoy a panoramic view of southeastern Tokushima City. On clear days, you can see the majestic Yoshino River, the Sanuki mountain range, Awaji Island, and even as far as the Kii Peninsula.
