Route
Course Description
This course takes you through the hidden gem of Iya Valley, which reveals different expressions with each season. The steep rapids that cross the Shikoku Mountains have carved dramatic cliffs, some plunging hundreds of meters deep. The autumn foliage here is nothing short of spectacular.
Caution Areas
The roads are narrow, with poor visibility, and traffic can be heavy. There are also risks of falling rocks and slippery grating. Be especially careful not to speed on the descents.
Challenging Sections
The climb from Roadside Station "Nishi-Iya" to the Iya Tunnel has a very steep incline.
Highlights
Take in the view from the iconic “Peeing Boy” statue standing on a cliff in Iya Gorge—one of Japan's three great hidden regions. The vine bridge, designated as a national and prefectural important tangible folk cultural property, offers a thrilling crossing experience. Nearby, you'll find hot springs and souvenir shops. You might even encounter an old-fashioned bonnet-style bus!
