Course Description
This is the most challenging mountain course in the Bicycle Kingdom of Tokushima. Cyclists can visit 5 of the 88 temples from the Shikoku Pilgrimage at one go: Onzanji Temple (No. 18), Tatsueji Temple (No. 19), Kakurinji Temple (No. 20), Tairyuji Temple (No. 21), and Byodoji Temple (No. 22). Challenge yourself on this cycling pilgrimage.
Caution Areas
Be cautious as the shoulder of the roads are narrow and there are places with heavy traffic. In addition, ride with caution as the road along the Naka River from Kakurinji Temple to Tairyuji Temple is narrow and there may be fallen rocks on the road.
Challenging Sections
The roads leading up and down from Tsuru Pass to Kakurinji are narrow and very steep. There are pilgrims who are walking on the paths, so depending on the surrounding conditions, please walk your bicycle.
Highlights
This course features the toughest climb—the ascent to temple No. 20, Kakurinji—which is famously mentioned in the henro korogashi (pilgrimage killer) verse: "First Yakeyama, second Tsuru, third Tairyū." The second line refers to this temple. To visit Temple No. 21, Tairyūji, which is mentioned third in the verse, take the ropeway from Roadside Station “Washi no Sato.” From the ropeway, you can enjoy spectacular views of the Naka River, rural landscapes, and the Kii Channel spreading out below.
